IVY CITY PASSIVE TOWNHOUSES

Affordable Multi-Family Housing

From 2010-2015, Barbara Gehrung acted as a Certified Passive House Consultant on a Habitat for Humanity project in Washington, DC. At a time when the Passive House Standard was relatively new in the U.S., Habitat formed a team to apply these principles to a multi-family affordable housing project in the neighborhood of Ivy City. Beginning with an energy-efficient housing design, the project team outfitted the homes with solar thermal hot-water collectors and grid-tied photovoltaic arrays to offset the remaining electricity consumption with solar energy. In order to uphold the organization’s commitment to accessibility, all materials for the project were sponsored or donated, and construction was made possible by grants and volunteer labor. The resulting homes are safe, comfortable, economical, and sustainable. For more about Habitat's work in the DC area, please visit their website HERE.
